From a simple concept, proposed as early as 1954, came the shape of things to come - a group of independent retailers who would be capable of taking their purchasing into their own hands, and give themselves options. Originally founded by 13 independent Houston area hardware retailes, some of whom are still in business today, Handy began small, and grew into a cohesive group of 19 by the end of 1961.

During the next 20 years, Handy's membership would grow to nearly 300, and from 1981 to 2004, to over 1,100 members in nine states and several Central American countries. In 1987, the company began working on a long-range expansion project that would last 12 years, and would grow the distribution center in Houston from 100,000 square feet to 560,000 square feet in 2001. This distribution center, with over ten acres under roof, is state-of-the-art, and was carefully designed to accomodate our member's needs in the decades ahead. The company is currently in the development stages of of constructing a warehouse facility in Meridian, MS. The facility will cover 468,000 sq ft, in an effort to help facilitate our expansion across the whole southeast region of the United States. The Meridian warehouse has an anticipated opening date of October 15, 2010.

Your driving skills and experience can be an asset to us. As a professional driver you demand the best and so do we. Please review our driver qualification requirements below and match it to your own.

- Have a minimum of two (02) or more current years over-the-road interstate commerce driving with dry vans.

- You must be twenty-five (25) years or older and possess a current Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with a minimum of a Hazardous Materials Endorsement (H).

- Be able to pass a DOT physical examination and pre-employment controlled substance abuse test.

- Have an established good driving record.

- No "DWI/DUI" convictions

- Not have three (3) or more moving violations and/or accidents in three (3) years; not have two (2) or more moving violations and/or accidents in a single year

- Not be convicted of reckless driving or convicted of homicide or assault with a motor vehicle

- Not be disqualified as a CDL driver in accordance with current DOT regulations.

- Have favorable references from previous employers over the past three (3) years.

- Pass an extensive background (including criminal) investigation.

- No prior positive controlled substance or alcohol tests or refused to be tested with other employers or prospective employers.

- Be home-based in Houston, Texas and/or surrounding areas.

- Be current and knowledgeable of current DOT regulations including the new hours of service requirments.

We pay competitive rates/mileage, quarterly safety bonuses, attendance bonuses, annual bonuses and other incentives.

Our loads are, what is called in the "trade," fingerprint loads even though most merchandise is shrink wrapped.
