The Village School offers Houston's first boarding school and new IB Diploma Programme
For Immediate Release:
The 2010/2011 school year marks the inauguration of two exciting programs for The Village School, an independent day and boarding school located in West Houston’s Energy Corridor and Serving families throughout Houston including Katy, Sugar Land, Eldridge, Bellaire, and West University. Opening its doors to boarding students in August, The Village School is the first college preparatory school in Houston to offer a boarding and residential life program to international, domestic, and Houston area students. In addition, The Village School has earned accreditation by the International Baccalaureate Organization as an IB World School, and offers students the option to enter the IB Diploma Programme during their junior year. This year 80% of Village School juniors are enrolled in the IB program.
Dr. Jonathan Silver, head of school: “We are excited to launch Houston’s first college preparatory boarding program. Houston is a global destination for business and education. Therefore, it was an easy decision to expand our day school to include a residential program. We see this as a great opportunity for students from around the world to receive a world-class independent school education in a world-class city, which prepares them for leadership in the 21st century. We also believe that our international diversity in both our day and boarding populations broadens and deepens exposure and enriches the learning environment.”
The student body at The Village School represents over 40 nations around the world; in the high school division, over two-thirds of the student body is fluent in a second language other than English; over 20 languages other than English are spoken in the homes of Village School students; students in the boarding program represent five continents. Currently, our boarders reside in the newly constructed dormitory located on The Village School’s 14-acre Westella campus.
The IB Diploma Programme is internationally recognized and provides both depth and breadth in its subjects: it develops student critical thinking, research, and writing skills, takes into consideration the nature of knowledge across disciplines, encourages international mindedness, and emphasizes the development of the whole student. The Diploma Programme is recognized by universities in the United States and abroad as one of the most rigorous and comprehensive college preparatory programs in the world, which has led to increased acceptance rates for IB Diploma recipients over their non-IB Diploma peers.
The Village School has experienced significant growth over the past three years. Village High School began its pioneer year in fall 2008, and has since grown to 200 students in grades 9 through 11. The pioneer class of 2012 will celebrate the first Village High School commencement in May, 2012.
Overall, The Village School student population nears 1000. In order to accommodate anticipated growth in the boarding program, in athletics and the arts, and in overall enrollment, The Village School has obtained twelve additional acres for program expansion.
