One more great thing about living in Houston is the area’s mild weather, which makes it possible to enjoy outdoor activities during much of the year. Even in winter, the weather can be pleasant enough to spend time outside – sometimes in shorts!

Elyson House, Elyson’s flagship amenity, has a number of fun outdoor spaces and activities that residents can enjoy for much of the year. And when it is too cold, or hot, to spend much time outside, Elyson House also has indoor amenities like Elyson Cafe, the gameroom, fitness center and more.

Here are 7 fun outdoor activities to enjoy at Elyson House almost any month of the year.

Event lawn. The grass is always green at the event lawn at Elyson House. That’s because it’s artificial turf, making it softer and safer for kids to run around during events such as outdoor movies, concerts and parties. Even when there’s no event going on, the lawn is a fun place to play.

Playground. Next to the event lawn, the playground at Elyson House also offers a soft surface and a large shade structure, along with play features designed for young kids of all ages.

Patio. The inviting patio at Elyson House is like the community’s front porch. With plenty of comfy seating and big-screen TVs, it hosts everything from game watch parties to impromptu chats. The cozy fireplace adds warmth to colder days, while the deep roof overhangs offer shade during the summer.

Café service. The interior of Elyson Café is definitely inviting, but you don’t have to come inside to enjoy it. You can also order from the walk-up window that opens to the patio. It’s the perfect way to order a coffee or hot chocolate in cold weather. In summer months, ordering poolside snacks is quick and easy.

Year-round swimming. The big pool at Elyson House is open 365 days a year, although it’s unheated and no lifeguards are on duty outside of the summer swim season. But on the many mild days in spring, fall and even winter, some residents might enjoy a bracing dip – and they’re welcome to plunge in. Water aerobics are also offered at the pool during summer months.

Tennis courts. Elyson House also offers tennis courts for year ‘round play. A short walk away, residents can enjoy pickleball and bocce ball at Elyson’s newest park.

Trails. The trailhead at Elyson House connects to a trail system that will ultimately extend for nearly 30 miles, as part of more than 450 acres that will be devoted to parks, trails and natural open spaces in Elyson’s master plan.

Elyson Cafe plans to serve up extra helpings of some of its most popular events in the new year, including Friday Night Dinners with wine, live music and food specials.

Featuring special entrees such as beef stroganoff and pork tenderloin, the Friday Night Dinners have become a big hit with Elyson residents and the general public. Starting at lunchtime on Fridays, the special is also available as a take-home meal for those who prefer to have dinner in.

There’s live music every Friday night, and one of the regular musicians is Elyson resident Alejandro Miramontes, who performs a wide variety of musical genres, combined with alternative rock instrumentation and original lyrics.

Located in Elyson House, Elyson Café plans to hold at least one special event each month in 2019, in addition to the Friday Night Dinners.

Some of the monthly events will be themed wine dinners, showcasing the food, wine and music of different countries. The café held its first themed wine dinner in 2018, featuring the flavors of Spain, along with live music by a classical guitarist.

The café is planning a special dinner for Valentine’s Day, and plans to add more specials in conjunction with Elyson’s calendar of resident events, such as movies and concerts on the event lawn at Elyson House.

The café will continue its popular Family Meals to Go menu, with new offerings included in a seasonally changing menu. Priced from $28, the meals serve four and include entrée, bread, salad and dessert.

For extra convenience, the Family Meals to Go and other items can be ordered online at the café’s website.

Elyson Café is the most appetizing part of Elyson’s lifestyle, and there’s much more to enjoy here, from fun events for residents of all ages, to miles of trails and hundreds of acres of parks and open space. Learn more.

Out of more than 9,000 public schools in Texas, only 31 schools were named “2018 Schools Transforming Learning” by the Principals’ Institute. This elite group includes all three of the Katy ISD schools serving Elyson: Bethke Elementary School, Stockdick Junior High and Paetow High School.

As part of the submission process to receive this honor, media students at Stockdick and Paetow created a three-minute video that explains the “educational village” approach that Katy ISD has taken with these three modern, state-of-the-art campuses. Bethke opened in 2016, and Stockdick and Paetow opened in 2017. All are located less than 4 miles from Elyson’s main entrance.

“In all three of our campuses, student focus is the golden thread that runs throughout,” says Paetow Principal Mindy Dickerson in the video. “Our theater departments created a combined show for all sixth-grade through high school students. Our elementary students see our high school athletic director in P.E. classes throughout the building. Eighth-grade science students are able to come over to Paetow High School and interact with our students over here and do learning walks around classroom spaces.”

“One the things that makes our three-campus cluster unique is that we are really striving to make sure that our campuses are student-directed and that our students become advocates for their own learning,” says Bethke Principal Carrie Lowery.

“We really strive in our fine arts programs across the junior high and high school to have connections, so that our band directors go over to the high school, and vice versa,” adds Stockdick Principal Mark McCord. He says the goal is to build a vertical 6-12th grade program in all fine arts concentrations.
